Minnesota School Knife Attack by Boy, 8, Injures 3 Others

Authorities in central Minnesota say an 8-year-old boy brought a kitchen knife to school Monday and randomly cut three other students. He was released to his parents due to his age.

Beise says the boy was interviewed by police and released to his parents.

School Superintendent Bruce Watkins says the boy lashed out at the other students until an adult intervened.

The incident happened prior to the start of classes for the day. Beise says that when officers arrived, the boy was in a counselor's office while the three children, who were not seriously hurt, were being treated by the school nurse. "We're not sure exactly why he came to school with a knife", Chief Perry Beise said.

The report is being forwarded to the Benton County Attorney's Office. The victims were 8, 9 and 13 years old. The other two are Pleasantview Elementary students. I don't think he had an intended target when he came to school with a knife.

An ambulance was called but was not needed.

As the Piedmont and Summerset area population grows-- the need for a new school to accommodate the students in the area grew and the new school school's principal says it will be a big deal for everyone involved when it opens this fall. Pleasantview has 720 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, according to the school district's website.

Close to 100 parents and students who have walked the halls of The Foundation School for Autism gathered for the school's first ever homecoming celebration. Mental health professionals are available on site at Pleasantview Elementary. There are approximately 790 students enrolled at the elementary school. Please know in situations like this the District's discipline policy is applied and aggressive students are not allowed in the building (s).
