Giroud leads Chelsea to overcome Southampton 3-2

Olivier Giroud proved to be the catalyst for a remarkable fightback as the Blues came from behind to see off Southampton on a scoreline of 3-2 leaving Mark Hughes' side in deep relegation trouble.

"Our first half wasn't good in a lot of aspects, not only tactically, but didn't show great spirit desire or the will to fight for a good result", Conte told Sky Sports.

He said: 'I think in the second half we could finish the game but like the last few months, we didn't and we conceded.

"We've shown great character, great team spirit". If they do, they will rue Saturday's game at St Mary's in which they were coasting at 2-0 until Olivier Giroud came on as a 61st-minute substitute.

Conte added, he is very happy for Giroud, adding he is in top condition now.

Antonio Conte gave credit for the unlikely comeback (first of its kind at Chelsea since 2002) to the players, and Giroud was chief among those who deserve plenty of those plaudits.

But Giroud showed what he is capable of with a fearless near post header from Alonso's pinpoint cross to get Chelsea back in the game with his first league goal for the club and spark an incredible fightback 20 minutes from time.

He said: "I think that the coach has to try to find a different solution, especially if you are losing, but I think the difference was that we played in the second half with great desire not to lose another game".

Antonio Rudiger was left out of Chelsea's dramatic comeback against Southampton on Saturday afternoon after questioning the tactics of manager Antonio Conte. It was hard for us to come back so we must be pleased by the desire we showed.

While Long was able to continue, the tackle easily could have been a straight red card, but referee Mike Dean did not issue any punishment to Alonso for the incident.

"It's a really poor challenge", he insisted. I am disappointed that the officials didn't see it. It could have had bad consequences for Shane.

"You've got to get the big decisions right". We need to finish this season in the best possible way.
