Los Angeles Kings Drew Doughty Suspended One Game for Illegal Hit

The Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights meet Friday in game two of the NHL Western Conference First Round Playoffs at the T-Mobile Arena.

It's been a season of firsts for the Vegas Golden Knights in their inaugural season, and now they have their first playoff overtime hero. Doughty has been suspended for one game This is for his illegal check to the head of William Carrier.

Doughty addressed the media Friday and commented on his forced absence from the Kings' crucial second game. Even without some of LA's best defensemen, their ability to keep the puck out of the back of the net was commendable - although perhaps most of that credit should go to goalie Jonathan Quick, who finished with an insane 54 saves on 56 shots.

The Golden Knights were also without No. 1 goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury for those two games, but Malcolm Subban made a career-high 41 saves and Reilly Smith scored the only goal in a six-round shootout in a 4-3 shootout win over Nashville on December 8.

"It's big", said defenseman Shea Theodore, who scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday.

The Golden Knights outshot Los Angeles in regulation, 35-20.

NOTES: The Golden Knights played their second playoff game on the one-year anniversary of Gerard Gallant being hired as head coach. Both of these teams were physical all game, with numerous scrums breaking out in front of the net, and the Kings' defense was stout while the Golden Knights' attack was relentless. Alex Tuch took a careening puck that ricocheted off the back glass and put a shot over a hapless Quick to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.

Vegas will look to take a 2-0 lead heading into Los Angeles for Game 3 on Sunday, and surely the Golden Knights would rather go into that stretch healthy. The Golden Knights have now had 80 minutes of scoreless hockey in this series.

- Haula's game-winning goal, the first-ever overtime playoff victor in Golden Knights history was assisted on by James Neal, who scored the first-ever goal in Golden Knights history earlier this season. "We don't play our best game every night, but we have a chance to win every night".

"We go to their building and it's going to be harder", Haula said.

The Kings got their first goal of the series on a power play, when LaDue fired a wrist shot from the point to beat Fleury with 4:05 left in the second.

No penalty was called on the hit, but Carrier was not able to return to the game.

Both teams had their chances in overtime, but Fleury and Quick were magnificent between the pipes.

Replays showed that Doughty initially hit Carrier on the top of the left shoulder but the hit then continued and caught the Vegas forward in the head. Fellow rock star Vince Neil got the crowd roaring to start the third period by winding up the air raid siren.
