Apple has been ordered to pay $500 million in iMessage patent suit

A federal jury rules that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has to pay VirnetX (NYSEMKT:VHC) $502.6M due to patent infringement.

In October 2017, Apple was also ordered to pay over $439 million as its "VPN on Demand" feature and FaceTime were determined to violate VirnetX's patents. Since 2010 it has been involved in legal battles with Apple over its.

Reports claim that the legal battle between Apple includes many legal suits and a myriad number of appeals. The case seemed to have been filed again in 2012 and was won by the patent troll, after which Apple had to pay almost United States dollars 368 million. Even so, there was still a major difference there, Apple and Samsung both use their patents in products that they make and sell, while VirtnetX focuses on court cases to bring in revenue.

One of the main reasons why VirnetX has been successful this time around is because it filed the lawsuit in Eastern Texas, which is a region that's notorious for ruling in favor of patent trolls.

"The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has said the patents are invalid, in cases that are now before the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, "Bloomberg reported".

Kendall Larsen, CEO of VirnetX, said the damages, which were based on sales of more than 400 million Apple devices, were "fair". As Bloomberg notes, however, the victory may be short-lived. "Tell the truth and you don't have to worry about anything". But it has been speculated that the decision is likely to be scrapped as the Patent Trial & Appeal Board has claimed the patents under investigation to be invalid.
