Missiles attack air base in Homs province -Syrian state TV

The United States launched a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base a year ago in response to the killing of dozens of civilians in a sarin gas attack in an opposition-held town in northwest Syria.

"Three missiles reached the western part of the aerodrome, five were destroyed by the Syrian Air Defense Forces", the ministry said in a statement.

Syrian state media said they were suspected to be U.S. strikes but the Pentagon formally denied involvement saying it was not conducting air strikes in Syria "at this time".

"On April 9 from 03.25 to 03.53 Moscow time, two F-15 jets of Israeli Air Forces, without entering Syrian air space, from territory of Lebanon, fired eight guided missiles at Tiyas air base".

In contradiction with SANA news' reports, the source said that there were no casualties as a result of a missile strike, and the airbase did not suffer any material damage.

U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier on Sunday there would be a "big price to pay" after medical aid groups reported dozens of people were killed by poison gas in a besieged rebel-held town in Syria.

Washington denied this, and France, which in February had said it would strike in the event of a chemical weapon attack on civilians by Syrian government forces, also said its forces were not involved.

The Pentagon said: "The Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria".

The report came after a suspected poison gas attack killed at least 40 in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, the last foothold for the Syrian opposition in the area.

Syria's state news agency SANA initially said the attack on the T4 air base was likely "an American aggression", but the Pentagon denied involvement, and the agency then dropped the accusation, blaming Israel instead.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria".

Turkey attacked Afrin in March to drive out the Kurdish militia, known as the YPG, which forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces, America's main partner in Syria.

What kind of gas was used in the latest attack in Syria?

"If it's Russian Federation, if it's Syria, if it's Iran, if it's all of them together, we'll figure it out", Trump said. He tweeted on Sunday there would be a "big price to pay" and said Russian Federation, its president, Vladimir Putin, and Iran were responsible for enabling "Animal Assad".

"The Secretary-General is particularly alarmed by allegations that chemical weapons have been used against civilian populations in Douma", a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

The fast-paced developments threatened to further hike tensions between the USA and Russian Federation, which has in the past warned against any US military action against President Bashar Assad's government.

Haley accused Russian Federation of protecting Syria at the United Nations while Moscow's military advisers in Damascus are helping Assad wage a "starve or surrender campaign" against Syrian civilians that includes the use of chemical weapons.
