Mueller's Team Questioning Russian Oligarchs in Collusion Probe

CNN notes the new development "reveals that Mueller's team has intensified its focus into the potential flow of money from Russian Federation into the U.S. election as part of its wide-ranging investigation into whether the Trump team colluded with Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election". The main reason are the Washington's accusations of Moscow's intervention in the presidential election in 2016.

Trump has faced fierce criticism for doing too little to punish Russia for the election meddling and other actions, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller is probing whether his campaign colluded with the Russians, an allegation the president denies.

The United States is expected to impose additional sanctions against Russian Federation on April 6, according to U.S. officials, The Washington Post reported.

The new sanctions will reportedly target Russian oligarchs, some of whom have ties to both President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin.

A second Russian oligarch was stopped during a recent trip to the USA, although it is not clear if he was searched, according to a person briefed on the matter.

The measures will be taken in the framework of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which was drafted by Republicans and Democrats in connection with the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, the Russian participation in the Syrian War and the intervention in the USA presidential elections. At the end of March a number of European states, as well as the United States, announced that they would expel over 100 Russian diplomats in connection with the incident. We published an oligarch designation recently and the secretary of the Treasury said further action would be taken.

Paul Manafort is not the only subject of the Russian Federation investigation to have been tweaked by the expansion of Robert Mueller's mandate, which was revealed in court documents earlier this week.
