Trump to Host Japanese Prime Minister at Mar-a-Lago Resort

While the date for that meeting has not been finalized, the White House had previously said it would occur before the end of May. The venue of the meeting will be Trump's luxurious resort in Florida - Mar-a-Lago.

While Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Kim to Beijing for a confidence-building meeting, North and South Korea are also in talks towards a summit to be held at a border town on April 27.

Trump and Abe will meet April 17-18 in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss trade and the president's planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The last time Trump and Abe met at Mar-a-Lago early in the president's term previous year, North Korea tested a ballistic missile during the summit.

It said only that Abe and Trump would meet at Trump's Florida estate to "discuss global campaign to maintain maximum pressure on North Korea" and to "explore ways to expand fair and reciprocal trade and investment ties between the United States and Japan". The North allowed five of them to visit Japan later that year - and they stayed - but said the other eight had died, though their families say what the North said can not be trusted.

If Trump raises the issue of a free trade agreement between Japan and the United States, Abe might be pressured to make concessions, Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.

"I'll talk to Prime Minister Abe of Japan and others - great guy, friend of mine - and there will be a little smile on their face".

He was the first foreign head of government to meet US President Donald Trump in November 2017 after he won the presidential election that year and made the headlines for his awkward handshake with the latter in another visit in February 2017.
