Head of Alexandria Security Directorate Escapes Bombing

Egypt's interior ministry and army have tightened security ahead of the elections, which will be held Monday through Wednesday.

Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek ordered an "urgent and wide inquiry".

"The major general was readying security for the elections", the source said.

Photos on social media that Reuters could not independently verify showed a burnt out auto and smoke at the site of the blast. Police forensics experts were examining the charred remains of the vehicle used for the bombing.

The Egyptian interior ministry's top security official in Alexandria survived an assassination attempt on Saturday that left two policemen dead and five others injured in a roadside bombing.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bomb.

As military commander, Mr Sisi led the ousting of Egypt's only competitively-elected leader, President Mohamed Mursi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, who was toppled amid demonstrations against his rule in 2013, a year after taking power.

Shortly thereafter, a bill was proposed in parliament criminalizing any statements authorities define as insults toward the armed forces or police, with penalties of at least three-year jail terms and fines upward of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (or $567).

The president's ultimatum came after suspected Daesh gunmen massacred more than 300 worshippers in a Sinai mosque associated with Sufi Muslims, seen by IS as heretics.
