Backlash as Donald Trump congratulates Putin on re-election win

Trump's decision Tuesday to ignore his advisers' guidance and congratulate Putin adds another layer to an emerging portrait in which the USA president has demonstrated a reluctance to confront the Russian leader amid an ongoing investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 election in his favor.

Trump's comments drew significant criticism among United States politicians, including by Arizona GOP Sen.

Putin won a fourth six-year term with what Russian officials said was 77 percent of the vote.

"It was agreed to develop further bilateral contacts in light of the changes in leadership at the US Department of State".

Ties between Russian Federation and the United States have been severely strained by disagreements over issues including Russia's aggression in Ukraine, its role in the war in Syria, and its alleged interference in Western politics and elections.

Nauert's comments are notably tougher on Russian Federation than those of the White House.

He also described a call he made to Putin to congratulate him on his reelection.

"We don't get to dictate how other countries operate", she said.

The White House later said there were no specific plans for a meeting.

"Why is the president so reluctant to criticize Putin?" Information on Syria and North Korea were also provided to the president in writing before the call, officials said.

"We had a very good call", Trump told reporters at the White House after the exchange, noting that the pair "will probably be meeting in the not-too distant future to discuss the arms race, which is getting out of control". London has blamed Moscow for the attack, a charge Russian Federation denies.

The phone call also came just days after the United States imposed sanctions against 19 Russian nationals and five entities over Russian interference in the USA elections.

After his victory Sunday, Putin struck a conciliatory tone in his celebratory remarks where he insisted that the priority for his new term would be economic growth and improving domestic conditions ahead of defense and security spending.

"We've been very clear in the actions that we've taken that we're going to be tough on Russian Federation, particularly when it comes to areas that we feel where they've stepped out of place". "The leaders spoke in favour of developing practical co-operation in different spheres, including on questions of how to ensure strategic stability and fight worldwide terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement. They met on the sidelines of an worldwide summit in Germany last summer and again more informally at another gathering of world leaders in Vietnam in November. "Special attention was focused on the issue of a possible top-level meeting", the Kremlin said.

While many U.S. officials suggest a working relationship with Russian Federation would be a positive thing for the U.S., Sen.

In a statement about the call between the two leaders, the Kremlin described diplomatic problems facing Russian Federation and the USA and confirmed Putin's intent to meet with Trump. Trump has said there was no collusion between his presidential campaign and Russians.
