Woods and Els named as Presidents Cup captains

Woods will lead the American team to Melbourne, Australia where he will strive to deny an Ernie Els International captained team only a second victory after the Peter Thomson led Internationals shocked the Americans and winning by nine points from the US-led Jack Nicklaus side in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.

Els, a four-time major victor, takes over from Nick Price who has guided the Internationals at the last three Presidents Cups.

An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.

"After working as a captain's assistant for Steve in 2017, I realized that I wanted to captain the 2019 event at Royal Melbourne", said Woods.

Woods and Els served as captain's assistants in 2017, when the 12-man USA team beat the Internationals 19-11 at Liberty National in New Jersey for their 10th Cup victory against one loss and one draw overall in the competition.

Both have featured eight times as players and were the primary figures in the 2003 event held in South Africa, where Woods and Els competed in a sudden-death playoff that ultimately ended in a tie and the two teams shared the Cup.

Woods and Els are certain to inject some life into the matches, from their own relationship and history, and from the most intense moment in Presidents Cup history. He is slated to be a vice captain at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, too.

"I had a good shot at winning the tournament", Woods said in a post-round interview on CBS. Els has been runner-up to Woods seven times, more than any other player.

Woods will follow Fred Couples, Jay Haas and Steve Stricker as captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team. He could potentially be a playing captain given how well he's hitting it right now and the fact that he's finished in the top 15 in each of his last two PGA Tour starts. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the captain selections have not been announced. Captains will later select four captains' picks (at date to be determined) closer to the December 2019 event.
