Trump's longtime personal assistant fired over security issues

John McEntee was one of the early Trump campaign true believers who followed the long-shot candidate to the White House - along with Hope Hicks and Dan Scavino.

"We don't comment on security clearances or personnel issues", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told CNN in a statement. On Tuesday morning, the Trump reelection campaign announced that McEntee had just been hired as a senior adviser for campaign operations. According to the Wall Street Journal, McEntee was escorted out of the White House and was not even allowed to gather his belongings. The cause of the firing was an unspecified security issue, said a third White House official with knowledge of the situation.

McEntee's departure was overshadowed by the news that Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him.

"Mr. McEntee wasn't as well known as the others, but had been a constant presence at Mr. Trump's side for the past three years", the newspaper reported.

But a senior administration official said numerous President's top aides were shocked by the abrupt departure, which the official described as a sudden decision.

Mr Trump's re-election campaign manager, Brad Parscale, announced on Tuesday Mr McEntee would rejoin the 2020 effort along with Katrina Pierson, a former Trump campaign spokeswoman. The role meant McEntee was almost constantly at the President's side.
