2 local contestants advance to the next round on abc's American Idol

After a two-year absence, the competitive singing reality show returns on a new network, ABC, with new judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.

The America Idol 2018 season 16 will continue with episode 2. It will be interesting to see if American Idol can regain the stature it once had in its early years.

With all of the success of NBC's "The Voice" overshadowing it's older, trailblazing singing-competition show, the student became the master.

On this Sunday night's two-hour debut, it's time to get to what we are here for - the open auditions.

Auditions were held in New York, Nashville, Los Angeles and Orlando. She was dead on with her original song, "Yard Sale", which impressed all the panel, particularly Katy, with its distinctive attention to detail. Last month, a former personal stylist said that the 43-year-old television personality groped and slapped her. She by far, had the best voice of the night. That was 6 years ago, so she's a better singer now. Let's wait and see! We'll be back tomorrow night with more auditions. "It's pretty special", Bryan shared about his role as a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. Lionel changes his vote and sends him to Hollywood!

Maddie Poppe, 19, Clarksville, IA. With that being said, Harper received three yeses from the judges. "I can't take it down, dumba****", she said while walking out of the audition. And Luke added that she'd be doing herself a disservice by doing singing as her career. You know it seems a little not soft - I do try and watch myself because I do know how it feels to be in their shoes.

The other showcased contestants from NY include Maddie Poppe, who sings The Muppet Movie song "Rainbow Connection", and gets three yeses for her "storyteller voice"; and Koby, a 26-year-old musical theater performer from Denver, who belts perhaps the longest, loudest vocal run in Idol history. Catie Turner from Pennsylvania sings the judges an original song called "21st Century Machine", and wins them over with her unique perspective and strong sense of self. She's headed to Hollywood! "When we're not compassionate, we get emotional".

Koby already had been cast on the Broadway stage and thought she was a shoo-in for this competition. But I'd give it D. But the judges loved him.

But it isn't just the judges who are winning fans over, it's the unparalleled talent that is walking through those famed audition doors, hoping for a golden ticket to Hollywood. He was accompanied by his fiancee Christie, who has stood by him through it all, in the audition room.
