White House officials alarmed at education secretary's '60 Minutes' performance

Sanders also said that the focus is "not one or two interviews, but on actual policy". DeVos often seemed at a loss for words as Stahl probed numerous most controversial points in her brief career as secretary: her faux pas about historically black colleges; the rollback of transgender student protections and Title IX sexual assault regulations on campuses; efforts to reduce racial disparities in school discipline.

DeVos spoke about a number of other issues during her interview, including whether teachers should be allowed to carry guns in schools, rolling back Obama-era regulations, and being the frequent target of protests.

Though DeVos was sworn in to her Cabinet position 13 months ago, she stumbled her way through a pointed "60 Minutes" interview with CBS' Lesley Stahl Sunday night and was unable to defend her belief that public schools can perform better when funding is diverted to the expansion of public charter schools and private school vouchers.

"If a bear comes into your classroom, throwing a book at him will only stun him momentarily, at best", DeVos said. "We owe that to our children", she said, tweeting a link to a "Fox and Friends" segment, in which she responds to The Huffington Post saying her school choice policy is a lie.

While her brother, the war monger Erik Prince, is coming under the scrutiny of Robert Mueller, Betsy DeVos is struggling with a much lower-stakes interrogation.

Lesley Stahl: No, but your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better, is not working in MI where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here. "Have you tried to figure out what they're doing?" DeVos said, for example, she had not "intentionally" visited an underperforming school and Stahl suggested that perhaps the secretary should.

"Maybe you should", Stahl said.

The White House did not respond to a request for an official comment regarding DeVos' performance.

"The secretary has been very intentional about visiting and highlighting high performing, innovative schools across the country", Hill told The Associated Press in a statement.

'Yeah, but are they the same?' the interviewer pressed.

The wife of Amway executive Dick DeVos and wealthy in her own right, Betsy DeVos is a former two-time state Republican Party chairwoman in MI.

'That should be an option for states and communities to consider.

Even DeVos doesn't buy her own nonsense.

She then changed tack again, adding, "but for those who are capable, this is one solution that can and should be considered, but no one size fits all". "No one size fits all".

During her confirmation hearing a year ago, DeVos memorably supported the idea of arming teachers - perhaps against grizzly bears, she joked.

Trump has said he was personally moved by the shooting - and by the persistent and impassioned calls for action from some of the teenage survivors as well as parents of the victims - and elevated the issue of school safety in his administration.

'The plan is a first step in a more lengthy process, ' she said.
