Instagram and Snapchat yank Giphy integration due to racist GIF

Well, why not? Not so long ago Instagram copied Snapchat by introducing "stories" that can also be posted to Facebook profiles. Instagram has done the same for Giphy integration on its platform.

The spokesperson says that all GIFs in Snapchat are meant to be "rated PG,". The GIF along with racial slur had a disturbing text. The extremely racist image features a white man telling a monkey to "keep cranking a n***er crime death counter".

We've all known about the whole Instagram-Snapchat-copycat thing for years at this point, and it looks like its Snapchat's turn to start bringing over some of its biggest competitor's features to its own mobile apps. ". Below is a screenshot of the GIF".

"We are in the process of removing Giphy from our application until we can be assured that this will never happen again", the spokesperson added.

Virginia Salas Kastilio aka @Ginicanbreathe, one of the world's top Snapchatters who formerly ran the BBC's account, tells me "I couldn't have grown on Snapchat without the support of my followers and other influencers shouting me out in their story".

GIPHY is yet to make a comment about the matter.

While the racist GIF has caused some internet backlash, it remains to be seen how and when Giphy will tackle this issue.

This isn't Snapchat's first run-in with racist content. Snapchat risks an unsavory reputation if it can't keep its content under control.

Snapchat and Instagram will have to decide whether they want help from outsiders even if it can't guarantee the quality or safety of their content, or whether it will go it alone as they compete against each other.
