Sen. Hirono Comments on North Korea Talks

President Donald Trump will not meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unless North Korea takes "concrete and verifiable actions" toward denuclearization, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Friday.

One obstacle the US State Department faces ahead of talks is a lack of senior diplomats experienced in dealing with North Korea.

"I renew my call for the president to appoint an American ambassador to South Korea and a new top diplomat for North Korea issues as soon as possible".

"The president will not have the meeting without seeing concrete actions", she stressed.

In 2017, the UN Security Council had also unanimously adopted sanctions against Pyongyang following a series of intercontinental ballistic missiles tests and a nuclear test.

January 1, 2018: Kim says in his New Year's address that he has a nuclear button on his desk, but also calls for improved relations with South Korea and suggests sending a delegation to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"We are moderately bearish on gold prices, and see the rising yield environment as a headwind", analysts at Société Générale said in a note. "Hopefully, the agreement will be implemented", Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

But analysts were damning, saying a US-North Korea summit was a win for Kim.

"We're a long way from negotiations". "I don't know yet, until we are able to meet ourselves face to face with representatives of North Korea, whether the conditions are right to even begin thinking about negotiations".

He also took credit for the recent rapprochement between the rival Koreas, as well as the United States, saying that without his "rhetoric and tough stance. they wouldn't be talking".

Before the White House began setting out conditions for the talks, China and Russian Federation welcomed the prospect of a summit.

North Korea's Kim, who has denounced previous Foal Eagle exercises as practice for an invasion, has asked that Foal Eagle and Key Resolve either be cut short or scaled down, but said that the exercises would not affect the proposed talks with Trump, according to South Korea's top envoy to the North.

"The great news is the labor participation rate went up, the headline numbers are great, and the average hourly earnings has settled back down into consensus", said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities in NY.

"Let's be very clear", said Mrs. Sanders, "the United States has made zero concessions".

There are many details to be ironed out before any Trump-Kim meeting could take place, not least the location.

Trump made the groundbreaking announcement in typical Trump fashion-on Twitter-and said that "great progress" was being made, but that "sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Thursday said hours before Trump's agreement that the USA was still a long way from agreeing to direct talks.

"A moment of panic or carelessness, a misconstrued comment or bruised ego could easily lead us unavoidably to the destruction of entire cities", ICAN head Beatrice Fihn said.
