CBI seeks Karti's custody for six more days

The judge said that the bail application would be taken up for consideration on March 15 after Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought time to file the reply to the plea.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra passed the order on Karti's plea despite strong opposition from Enforcement Directorate that the plea should not be allowed to be withdrawn but heard and disposed of.

Salman Khurshid, Karti Chidambaram's lawyer and former minister, had said they had asked the Supreme Court, and now the High Court, to cancel the summons by the ED because they anticipated "sequential arrests".

Karti was arrested last month on his arrival at Chennai Airport and has been in custody since 28 February, NDTV reported.

At the outset, the Sibal said the ED case was of "political vendetta" and "witch hunting" and so far, Karti has not been given the ECIR copy to know the details of the case.

P Chidambaram was present in the courtroom through the hearing.

The CBI, however, said that a CD and hard disks have been recovered from the office of Advantage Strategic Pvt Ltd (ASPL) in Chennai in connection with the case which needed to be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for examination.

The Delhi High Court bench of Justices S Murlidhar and Justice I S Mehta on Friday (March 9) granted interim relief to Karti Chidambaram from arrest from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the INX Media money laundering case.

The court has also allowed the CBI to bring two others accused in the INX Media case, Indrani and Peter Mukerjea to Delhi and identify the places where they met the Karti Chidambaram. He has repeatedly said he was being framed by the agencies at the instance of the government.

Singhvi said Karti's blood pressure (BP) levels are fluctuating between 140 and 190 and he is in bad shape.

Karti will now be in CBI custody till March 12.

Singhvi also stated that the address raided by the CBI was given by him through an affidavit to the agency on July 17, 2017 and the claim of discovery made by CBI was completely "spurious". Karti is facing the charges for using his stature and money to acquire Foreign Investment Promotional Board clearance for the INX Media firm in the year, 2007.

The CBI had initially alleged that Karti received Rs 10 lakh as bribe for the FIPB clearance. These included Karti Chidambaram, INX Media and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.
