Ava DuVernay Discloses Why She Rejected the Chance to Direct 'Black Panther'

Instead, he chose to take an alternative route by contacting A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay.

"Do I hug her, do I shake her hand?" She's a California transplant by way of the South, raised on a healthy diet of "ma'ams" and "sirs".

Reese Witherspoon shape-shifting into an oversized flower-dragon-slash-flying-carpet?

The film's lead, 14-year-old Storm Reid, and 16-year-old actress Rowan Blanchard make cameos in the song's music video, presenting a united, post-millennial front and an innocent-yet-assured attitude toward the world laid out before them. "They have love and passion for what they're doing, but their fame doesn't get in the way". In the book, all the characters are white; the film, re-adjusted under DuVernay's gaze, is a splendorous prism of diversity.

Bullied at school tweener Meg (an appealing Storm Reid) helps care for her little brother, Charles Wallace (a scene-stealing Deric McCabe), while their handsome mother (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), another outstanding scientist, does the best she can on her own. But that doesn't stop cute classmate Calvin (Levi Miller) from attempting to interact with Meg.

"It makes me excited!" the bubbly Oscar victor added before joking about roping in her kids to help with her summer film school: "I'm going to make my family work at the camp". Less effort on hair, wardrobe and hugs and more on dialogue and originality, I say.

Reid plays Meg as quiet and insecure, a true loner wrapped up in angst.

As the film opens, a tenuous reunion has been engineered by Amanda's mother, who is paying Lily to tutor (and befriend) her disturbed daughter. The actress, whose Instagram bio declares that she's a "future filmmaker", has been in the business for about a decade now, making her feature-film debut in the 2013 best-picture victor 12 Years a Slave. Reid didn't get a chance to meet the trio-even after she notched a small part in the DuVernay-directed Jay-Z video "Family Feud". With so many people mesmerized by her performance, it's hard to imagine any other actress inhabiting "Wrinkle's" lead role, but that nearly happened, thanks to Reid's prior commitment to a Disney Channel series.

"I was really nervous but her presence calmed me down".

"They [Marvel] asked me to consider making it three years ago", DuVernay said.

Life has provided plenty of other unbelievable moments amid the Wrinkle press tour. I sometimes bemoan the lack of risk-taking in blockbuster films, but A Wrinkle in Time takes lots of risks and winds up whiffing about half the time.

"With a baby girl, you get sent a lot of colorful things, pink things, and I thought this was so, um, so sweet and very fancy", she said during the interview.

I saw a screening of Director Ava DuVernay's new film, A Wrinkle in Time, last night at a promotional screening. If only I could have heard it back then. But beyond Meg's attractive locks, the weirdo wigs (one appears to be an inert crimson fox perched on Witherspoon's head) and scary clothes, "A Wrinkle in Time" suggests a pop American version of those Narnia films, complete with allegorical lessons and the usual platitudes, including, ye gods, "Be true to yourself".

Along the way, DuVernay tries to imprint her directorial stamp, opening with a distorted view through a glass bottle, then using a piece of origami with an unfolding heart to show that love is always around, even when we can't see it. But for the time being, she's still a kid herself-still relishing pockets of free time, still plotting a trip to Disneyland to ride Space Mountain with her friends.

"She looked like one of my aunties cooking at the marae".
