A statement from the facility read: 'Law enforcement is at the Yountville Veteran's Home right now following reports of gunfire.

"We have not made contact with the gunman yet", Robertson said, adding that cops are "approaching this as an active shooter situation".

Earlier, it emerged the veterans home was on lockdown after reports of shots fired.

The veterans home is an important part of the Napa Valley Community, with the 1,200-seat Lincoln Theater, a golf course and a large library, CalVet said.

Still, she worked about the stress of the lockdown on her father, considering his age and that he has post-traumatic stress disorder and some dementia.

The man apparently slipped into the sprawling Veterans Home of California during a going-away party. She said she's lived in Yountville since 1995 and is rattled about a shooting so close to home.

- Shots were fired at The Veterans Home of California in Yountville near the dining hall Friday morning, and there are three hostages, according to Napa County Fire. The staff is also monitoring the situation in Napa County so it can provide updates to residents and employees.

An armoured police vehicle, ambulances and several fire trucks were at the scene.

The facility houses about 1,000 aging vets and is the largest veterans home in the United States, according to the department.

Fransen said authorities were working to establish a secure perimeter around the facility.

The sheriff's department did not immediately respond to a telephone call from The Associated Press.

Yountville is in Napa Valley, the heart of Northern California's wine country.
