Technical issue causes huge delays at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport is playing catch up processing passengersin the global terminal, and one of two of the domestic terminals, after a technical issue caused chaos and delays.

Impacting multiple flights nationwide, the computer glitch prevented passengers from boarding until the system was restored, creating crowds of frustration throughout departure terminals.

It comes as Sydney Airport was thrown into turmoil this morning when a technical issue caused major delays to flights from terminals 1 and 2, with the airport even going as far as telling passengers to avoid the airport altogether. Almost 16 million of those were worldwide passengers, with those from China being one of the major sources of travellers, according to airport figures.

Virgin Australia flights were also recovering from significant delays, which included two cancellations.

It affected systems including the airport's CCTV, meaning passengers could not be screened for about two hours.

The airport is yet to estimate when the issue will be completely resolved.

Virgin Australia said that "due to a technical issue" passengers were being processed at reduced capacity. The airport has now resumed processing passengers as per usual, it said on Twitter, without specifying details of the problem.

Inbound flights and Qantas flights from T3 remain unaffected.
