Nashville Mayor Megan Barry Resigns In Wake Of Extramarital Affair Revelation, Investigation

Barry wished him and others well as she resigned.

She faces three years of unsupervised probation and will repay $11,000, according to court documents.

Barry has been under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Metro Council.

The mayor is being investigated for having an extramarital affair with her former bodyguard, Metro police Sgt. Robert Forrest, to which she admitted to back in January. Reports also allege that Barry and Forrest often traveled alone without additional security or staff.

The revelation of the affair led to an investigation, which found probable cause that a nude photo and partially nude photo of a woman found on Forrest's work cellphone were taken while he was working and the two were engaging in their relationship while he was on duty.

Amid the news that Nashville's mayor, Megan Barry, has resigned, Maren Morris has shared her support for the politician. However, Barry does not think she improperly misused taxpayer money, NPR reported.

Her resignation means Vice Mayor David Briley will take over as mayor.

"Today I acknowledged publicly that I have engaged in an extramarital affair with the former head of my security detail", Barry said in a January 31 statement. According to the newspaper, Forrest accompanied Barry on trips to Paris, Washington, New York, Denver, Oakland and other cities in the past year.

"I have lots of work to do in this city and every day I get up and I do it", she said.

Calls for Barry to resign have been popping up in yard signs around town in recent weeks, amid charges that the mayor's affair reveals poor judgment and possible conflicts of interest.

Rob Forrest. But in the affidavit, an agent says he believes a black purse in one nude photo is the same purse found in a different photo of Barry found on Forrest's phone.

Underscoring the timing of Barry's departure is the looming May 1 referendum on Barry's ambitious and expensive transit plan, by far the biggest political battle of her tenure.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the matter and says its investigation "remains active and ongoing".
