United Midfielder Scott McTominay Pledges International Career to Scotland

He was very impressive in the win against Chelsea, and now McTominay has decided he will play with Scotland not England in the global scene.

"Not because he's not good enough for England but because he wants to play for Scotland and that's great to see".

The 21-year-old was born in Lancaster but has Scottish ancestry through his grandparents. I'm sure England were desperate for him as well, with the World Cup coming up in the summer.

And asked for his view, Barton said: "What's he playing at?"

McTominay has been associated with United since he was five and made his senior debut against Arsenal last May. "If he's got that, it'd be very hard for him to play for England".

The fast rising star is expected to be named in Scotland's squad for the games against Costa Rica and Hungary this month.

The former England midfielder, who is now banned from football after breaching betting rules, added: "Maybe Manchester United and Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] have influenced it".

"Maybe I felt that a little bit - you have to do something in the game, you have to create, you have to score, you have to show you're a good passer". "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

The United manager added: "The kid is very "feet on the ground", he's very calm, so I think he passed some important tests not by the football point of view but the mental point of view - maturity, calm play against champions, play knockout in the Champions League, two tests by the mental approach".

The Irish Times cited a September 2016 interview with the club website, in which Scott McTominay said that he felt more Scottish than English.
