Secret Service: Male shot himself to death near White House

A report of "shots fired" near North Lawn, per a U.S. Secret Service agent.

The security scare came a little more than a week after a vehicle hit a security barrier near the White House, resulting in the arrest and charge of a 35-year-old driver.

Law enforcement officers speak to witnesses after a security scare at the White House when a man apparently shot himself, according to a law enforcement source.

The White House the official home of the USA president, has been placed on lock-down.

The Secret Service tweeted: "No other reported injuries related to the incident at the White House".

The Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department is taking the lead in the investigation, the Secret Service spokesperson said. "Will provide updates as they come in".

Traffic was brought to a standstill and journalists sheltered in the briefing room during the incident.

No one else was injured, although there were reports that people at the White House sheltered in place.

Medical personnel were called to respond to the male victim, but he was declared dead at the scene, the U.S. Secret Service said. "The president has been briefed", a White House spokeswoman said in a statement. "We refer all questions to the secret service".
