Snap wants to put more pairs of Spectacles on your face

It's unclear why Snap thinks a new iteration of spectacles could solve, especially since the project is reportedly beset by missed deadlines.

Speaking to insider sources, Cheddar reports that Spectacles 2.0 will launch later this year, with Spectacles 3.0 coming in 2019 and bringing with it two cameras rather than one. Spectacles now sell for $130 - if they sell at all, that is.

According to internal data from Snap, less than half of Spectacles owners continued to use the camera-equipped sunglasses after just four weeks of owning them.

Additionally, the giant is reportedly working on the third edition of the Spectacles as well. A potential retail price of around $300 has been touted. In addition, Snap is already working on a third generation of the device that will feature two cameras, which is supposed to allow 3D effects in recorded videos. The company had released the Specs to certain markets only, however in the previous year, i.e. 2017, the giant has made the specs available to more markets around the world.

The news comes from Cheddar reporter Alex Heath, who has a track record of nailing major Snap-based scoops.

Snap is also talking with big glass manufacturing companies such as Warby Parker and Luxottica for licensing out its camera technology. If Spectacles actually look as cool as Snapchat makes them out to be, then maybe they'll find themselves on more faces. The company took a painful $40 million loss only selling 150,00 units.
