The Cobb County School District does not support or endorse walkouts/protests that cause interruption to normal school operations. Many Big Sky staff have also been trained in "active resistance" as well, Jaeger said.

"There's not a single doubt in my mind that he was joking", Gabriel said.

11Alive asked officials whether there are metal detectors at the schools; there are none.

"This is absolutely not a joke", Clark said.

School administrators have encouraged their students to vent their feelings and to demonstrate against gun violence and some students have held demonstrations of their own outside of schools.

"Police acknowledge the resentment from our community towards the actions of the offender in this assault, and we would like to thank the school for their cooperation and assistance with the investigation so far". "A lot of times, our school counselors have different things to do".

Police credited the students at Central Middle School with quickly notifying police about the threat. Andress said students and staff will have to show their ID card. All threats are taken seriously.

"We are working in close contact with administration and student council to ensure student safety and participation", Andress told us. "And I'm frankly sorry that it was so hard on you and so hard on us and so hard on our students". "We urge parents to talk with their children about the seriousness of making any threatening remarks and to report all suspicious behavior observed in person or on social media".

The student is now being held in a youth detention center.

After being questioned, the teen was arrested and booked into juvenile hall.
