"Black Panther" Quickly Reaches $400 Million At US Box Office


It features Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serki.

After earning $201.8 million domestically between the Friday and Sunday that it opened and $404 million worldwide by the Monday, the superhero movie went on to break a number of records.

Black Panther earned the second biggest MCU opening ever with $202 million over the three-day period.

The much-discussed new Marvel film - which stars the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Michael B Jordan and Lupita Nyong'o - has achieved one of the biggest-ever second weekend of ticket sales, earning an estimated $108 million in the United States, plus a further $83.8 million internationally.

A key factor in the popularity and wide acceptance of Black Panther as being the best African American super hero movie is the inclusion of a majority black cast, music, production, and directing staff.

Black Panther dominated the box office again this weekend, and not just in a way that a movie with no competition normally would. ("The Avengers" occupies the top spot, with $623 million). Forbes notes that the film has grossed $400 million in 10 days, running second-fastest grosser of all time (as of now).

Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman will be returning as Black Panther in Marvel's upcoming Avengers sequel, Infinity War, which is due to arrive in theaters on May 4. Kyle Chandler, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, and Jesse Plemons also star in the movie, which was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein based on a script from Mark Perez.

Teachers from School 17 and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity started a GoFundMe campaign last month as part of the "Black Panther Challenge" to bring about 90 children to see the movie.

"Peter Rabbit" was third, with $12.5 million in its third weekend in release.

Not only to they have to count the rapidly rising stacks of cash from the box office, but they also have to count the ways the new superhero smash is approaching several box office records. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson costar. Orion insiders say that's a win, considering the film cost under $5 million to produce.

Annihilation and Fifty Shades Freed round out the top five. Updated with revised grosses.
