Conte feels Christensen could captain Chelsea one day

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has revealed that he thinks Danish centre-back Andreas Christensen has both the mentality and ability to become club captain at some point in the future.

The Italian may have come in for criticism this season but some of the positives come in the form of players he has blooded through.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has claimed that Andreas Christensen has the potential to become Blues captain.

Christensen made a costly error against Barcelona in the recent Champions League clash, but Conte has urged the player's critics to acknowledge his success in the side up to now.

'That's the past. We must be focused for United and to prepare in the right way, because they're a very strong team with fantastic players.

Though, his breakthrough season hasn't been without his mistakes.

Prior to this, however, Christensen has been among the best, if not the best, defenders in the Premier League for Chelsea.

Though, his boss has defended him today and lauded praise on him.

He said: "I consider a great achievement if you are able to win something after a season".

'If I had to talk about all the mistakes I made in my career, we'd have to be here for one day.

"As a centre-back, you get punished by your mistakes, however, it's the position that I've chosen to play, so I won't be dwelling too much on it and let it get to me".

"It doesn't matter. Christensen is having a fantastic season and showing great maturity".

The 21-year-old defender made the headlines recently with his misplaced pass against Barcelona costing dear to the Blues.

'For me, apart from the mistake, his performance was great, was wonderful.

"I trust Christensen. I think this player is the present and also for the future of Chelsea".

"He can also become the captain of this team in the future." said Conte.

While the new captaincy is in the long-term, a showdown with Jose Mourinho is in the short-term.
