Apple Reportedly Working On Water Resistant AirPods

The first of two AirPod updates is expected to land later this year, and will feature built-in Siri functionality that can be summoned via voice command, according to a Thursday report by Bloomberg which cited anonymous sources. The introduction of new AirPods may also bring down the price of older models.

The first model of the device used a wireless chip known as the W1, and its next version, the W2, was launched by Apple past year with the Apple Watch. People familiar with the matter claim that Apple wants these wireless headphones to be able to survive splashes of water and rain. The next-gen AirPods will feature a new wireless chip, better Siri interaction and a new case. This version of the AirPods is internally known as B288, and will include the new Apple-designed wireless chip for managing Bluetooth connections as well. Considering AirPods cost a rather hefty US$159 from Apple's online store at the moment, it's prudent for users to take great care of their product.

The voice-activated pair will be able to wake when a user gives the "Hey Siri" command, much like the iPhone and Apple's new HomePod. Part of those sales can also be attributed to the Apple Watch Series 3, which sold twice the volume of the Apple Watch Series 2.

The first-generation AirPods are not listed as being water resistant but it's created to be used while users are working up a sweat during jogs or other workouts. The new version of Apple's AirPods will supposedly allow users to simply speak the phrase "Hey Siri" at any time to wake Siri.

Bloomberg didn't specify when we can expect the 2018 version of AirPods to arrive.
