AT&T on Wednesday announced three of the 12 US markets that will be part of its initial rollout of mobile 5G service later this year.

The telecommunication company is the first to announce plans to offer 5G to customers in 2018. That trailblazing move makes the company the only USA carrier to roll out plans for the high-speed technology in 2018, according to its announcement.

For the unaware, 3GPP is the organization now in charge of determining what should and should not be considered a "true" 5G network. The Cupertino company lagged years behind its competition in adopting 3G and 4G LTE so it could unfortunately be even longer until we see an iPhone that's compatible with AT&T's network. That level of 5G is likely years away, though mobile 5G is a promising place to start. The new 5G lab in Austin will allow the carrier to conduct tests standards-based 5G including Advanced 5G NR Testbed Systems.
