Horror luge crash stuns Winter Olympics crowd

She was in her fourth run and in curve 9 when she lost control of the sled, bounced around and crashed. She got sideways out of 9, and started oscillating up and down 12, before her feet hit the roof, coming back down on her neck and head it looked like.

Amid concerned silence from the crowd, the American luger got up and walked herself off the track. According to the online broadcast, Sweeney was on her way to a hospital. After a few minutes, she was seen sitting under her own power, and was soon walking without assistance, albeit gingerly.

Emily Sweeney's mum, Sue (centre), watches on in horror as her daughter crashes during her luge run. It wasn't long, however, before Sweeney was able to stand up and walk off the ice, and she was met with resounding cheers and applause from fans and spectators.

Team USA luger Emily Sweeney was knocked out of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games following a terrifying crash in the final heat.

After the conclusion of the event she reappeared at the track flanked by several members of USA Luge and while she didn't stop for questions she did say, "I'm fine, I'm OK". Crashes, however, have not come as often as they did in the 2006 and 2010 Games, both of which left athletes openly complaining about track safety. Sweeney is just 24 years old, though, so we can hopefully count on her returning to competition for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Sweeney is in her first Olympics. She was.412 seconds behind Geisenberger.

Competition was suspended while medical officials attended to Sweeney.
