NY Attorney General files civil rights lawsuit against Weinstein brothers, Weinstein Co

"The suit, filed today in New York County Supreme Court, includes new and extensive allegations about longtime company CEO Harvey Weinstein's vicious and exploitative mistreatment of company employees".

The sale of the Weinstein Company, which was supposed to be completed this weekend, was thrown in turmoil as the outgoing board of directors rejected a settlement offer by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman over civil rights violations.

Schneiderman's office launched an investigation in October into the brothers' company as accusations of sexual harassment and assault against Harvey Weinstein - and a subsequent cover up - began to surface.

Schneiderman said the sale was "imminent" and that it could go through without giving Weinstein victims a chance to be properly compensated.

The suit charges that the human resources department at the Weinstein Company was completely corrupt.

The lawsuit potentially complicates the sale of the company, once one of Hollywood's most powerful film studios. The suit seeks compensation for employees and to prevent executives who may have enabled the alleged conduct from taking power at the company in the future. "Every New Yorker has a right to a workplace free of sexual harassment, intimidation, and fear".

In the new suit, Weinstein is accused of telling several employees, "I will kill you", "I will kill your family" and "You don't know what I can do". The complaint also cites instances in which Weinstein Co. senior managers failed to respond to employe complaints about Harvey Weinstein's behavior.
