Mourinho: United's defeat to Newcastle was lovely

While the Magpies fought like animals, to lift themselves out of the relegation zone for the time being, Manchester United often looked like a side that couldn't be bothered.

The Scotland winger converted the free kick, which was set up by Chris Smalling taking a dive.

Mourinho claimed there were "no problems" with Pogba's fitness, despite some suggestions he was carrying an injury, and says he planned to make the change before his side went behind. Where my criticism comes is that he doesn't understand the game as a central midfield player, he's an off-the-cuff kind of player.

Explaining his decision to remove Pogba on Sky Sports after the match , Mourinho said: "I wanted a better way to come out in the first phase against a team defending in a compact block".

And Mourinho admitted that the home side deserved their three points following the impressive way in which they performed against his side.

United will have to quickly put the result behind them though if they wish to remain in the Champions League spots otherwise their season will quickly unravel.

Asked for his assessment of Pogba's performance, Mourinho added: "I don't analyse players individually".

The goal certainly instilled a sense of urgency into United, with them dominating possession and Rafa Benitez's side soaking up pressure inside their own half.

"We made a defensive mistake and when they are in front they had only one thing in mind and gave their lives to keep a clean sheet".

"I was unlucky because they scored a goal in the seconds before that and then I'm going to face a different Newcastle".

Manchester United will return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on Huddersfield Town in the fifth round of the FA Cup away from home.
