Israel attacks 12 Syrian, Iranian targets in Syria

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on all the parties involved in the ongoing military conflict in Syria to respect the territorial integrity of the country after Israel attacked positions inside the Arab country, saying that the creation of threats in Syria, where Russia is militarily present, is unacceptable.

During the call, Netanyahu had also reassured Putin that military co-ordination between their countries would continue.

Addressing the Conference of Foreign Guests Participating in the Celebrations of Iran's 1979 Revolution anniversary, General Salami said the U.S. has failed in its projects in Syria.

Sources in Damascus said there were casualties among Syrian forces.

Saturday marked the first time that Israel lost an aircraft in a combat situation since 2006, when an Israeli Yasour (Sikorsky CH-53) helicopter was shot down over Lebanon. "This was a defensive effort triggered by an Iranian act of aggression and we are defending our airspace, our sovereignty and civilians", an Israeli military spokesman said on Saturday.

Iran denounced Israeli "lies" and said Syria had the right to self-defence in response to the strikes.

The attack was caused by the intrusion into Israeli airspace of an Iranian drone launched from Syria, said the Israeli army.

The two pilots ejected and were recovered and hospitalized, said the army.

"Today's developments mean the old equations have categorically ended", the group said in an official statement. The drone was spotted by Israel and residents across the Golan Heights and the Jordan Valley were woken by air raid sirens which sounded when the UAV was intercepted near the Israeli town of Beit She'an by an Apache attack helicopter.

"Our air defense systems responded to missiles fired by the Israeli enemy air force from over Lebanese territory on a military outpost in Damascus countryside and destroyed a lot of them", an army statement said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the seven-year civil war, said the earlier Israeli raids had targeted several military bases in the east of the central province of Homs. The relations are all the more strained as three enemies of Israel operate on the Syrian theater: the regime itself, Hezbollah and Iran.

In Damascus, the official Sana news agency claimed that the DCA had repulsed Israeli planes and hit "more than one", reporting raids on military installations near Damascus in the center and south of the country.

The Israeli military declined comment. It said the bases are used by both Iranian and Russian military personnel deployed in support of the regime.

The military says the pilots abandoned the aircraft and were safe.

"Israel seeks peace, but we will continue to defend ourselves steadfastly against any attack against us or any attempt by Iran to establish itself against us in Syria", Netanyahu said in a televised statement.
