18 killed in Hong Kong bus crash

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Saturday's crash was the worst in Hong Kong since 2003, when 21 passengers were killed in another bus crash.

Photos and videos published by local media or posted by users on social media showed the gold-colored bus lying on its side while emergency workers rushed to treat injured passengers nearby.

A police spokeswoman said 15 men and three women were killed in the accident near the town of Tai Po in the northern New Territories.

Firefighters with some of the passengers killed in the crash. They were confirmed dead at the scene.

"It was much faster than I normally felt in a bus", he said, sitting by the road.

The paper reports 37 people were taken to 12 different hospitals and there were efforts to rescue two more people stuck on the bus.

The bus was on its way from Sha Tin racecourse to Tai Po Centre when it flipped onto its side while attempting to turn. It was really chaotic on the bus.

An executive with The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. says $10,230 will be paid to the family of each victim.

"(The driver was) intentionally using the bus to throw a tantrum", another injured passenger told the Oriental Daily.

KMB general manager Godwin So Wai-kei said the 30-year-old unidentified driver joined the company in 2014 and had driven the route before.

Most of the injured and bodies of the deceased were found on the upper deck of the bus, and the deceased mostly died of trauma to the head, rescuers said.

She said: "The goal is to ensure a safe and reliable public transport system. especially for bus services".
