He was staying with the New England Patriots. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia was linked to the Detroit Lions head coaching vacancy for weeks, which eventually came to fruition.

It could have been McDaniels' second opportunity to work as a head coach after his one-year stint with the Denver Broncos in 2009-2010. The Patriots' 12 victories over the Colts since 2002 are the most nondivisional wins over one opponent for any team in the National Football League in that span. His need for assistance on his road to recovery only made McDaniel's U-turn more painful for Indianapolis.

"I live in a black and white world", Ballard said.

McDaniels has been roundly skewered for committing to Indianapolis then pulling out hours after the team had announced his hiring, especially given that his prospective assistant coaches had already left their previous jobs to join him with the Colts. The Patriots won both games in blowout fashion, with the 2014 AFC title game kicking off the infamous DeflateGate scandal.

There is speculation McDaniels is considered Belichick's eventual head coaching successor with the Patriots. But until them, he's going to keep taking a lot of heat - and deserving most of it. Candidates that should secure consideration include Eagles duo Frank Reich and John DeFilippo and Kansas City special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who interviewed for the post originally. His decision was reportedly down to a long meeting with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick that took place whilst McDaniels was at Gillette Stadium to clear out his office.

While the hunt for a head coach and the status of Andrew Luck seem to be on the forefront, the Colts face other questions as well.

Pagano was sacked on 31 December after the team finished 4-12 in a season without injured quarterback Andrew Luck. The same report suggests McDaniels' desire not to move his family - which includes four children - also played a role in the decision to spurn the Colts. After scheduling a press conference for Wednesday to introduce him, McDaniels backed out of the job and chose to go back to New England.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, those assistants are expected to have the option of remaining with the team a nd serve on the new head coach's staff.
