Val Demings gives the closing prayer at National Prayer Breakfast

He says that the United States is a nation of believers and that we value faith in God above all else.

Trump's remarks were part of the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a major DC-area event that features several members of Congress, world leaders, religious leaders, and other honored guests.

Under Eisenhower's leadership "In God We Trust" was added to U.S. currency and the phrase "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance.

"That is why the words "Praise be to God" are etched atop the Washington Monument", Trump said, "and those same words are etched into the hearts of our people". And while numerous president's comments on faith have been polarizing, his words and actions have some concerned with how little influence Americans who don't embrace religion have in the current White House.

Although Trump did not explicitly campaign as a religious leader, he has promoted himself as a defender of religious faith and has touted the centrality of God to American civic life.

"We see the Lord's grace in the servicemembers who risk their lives for our freedom, we see it in the teachers who work tirelessly for their students and the police who sacrifice for our communities, and sacrifice they do", he said.

And although Trump rarely attends church himself, the emphasis on the role of God in his vision of America is something with which a growing number of citizens disagree. America's heroes rise to this calling.

As Sophia prepared for surgery January 24 to continue treatment for the disease that caused the strokes, she sought prayers from people. "America will forever be the land of the free, the home of the courageous, and a light to all nations".

Trump said, "Let us resolve to find the best within ourselves". "Your presence reminds us of Jesus" words in the book of Matthew, "with God all things are possible'". "And I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can".

Last year, Trump kicked off his National Prayer Breakfast address thanking Celebrity Apprentice creator/executive producer Burnett, who had introduced him. "So today we praise god for how truly blessed we are to be American".

"America will flourish, as long as our liberty, and in particular our religious liberty, is allowed to flourish", Trump said.

Kelly traveled to the speech with Trump, a tacit acknowledgment that even as the fallout from Porter's departure ensnares the chief of staff, the President remains committed to Kelly.
