Joker Movie Aiming to Cast Joaquin Phoenix

Though Warner Bros. had no comment regarding the casting rumours, sources revealed that Phillips met with Phoenix late previous year and is waiting for the studio make a decision on who would follow Jared Leto as the modern-day Joker. While talks for this could definitely go through, Phillips has reportedly stated that Phillips wants Phoenix, and that Phoenix has agreed to the role.

The role would not be connected with the current DC Extended Universe.

Joaquin Phoenix will play the iconic Batman villain the Joker in an upcoming movie about the antagonist's origins, various news outlets reported Thursday afternoon. Joker is already a part of the existing universe, with Jared Leto starring as the classic villain in 2016's Suicide Squad.

Phillips is signed on to direct and co-write the project alongside Scott Silver.

Leto is set to reprise the role in the Suicide Squad sequel as well as a a spin-off based on the relationship between the Joker and Harley Quinn. Instead, this film would be the one previously announced that is set to be directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese.

In the wake of a troubling roll-out for their extended universe, including the poorly received "Justice League" and "Suicide Squad", and the massive success of "Wonder Woman", Vulture reported a year ago that DC and Warner Bros. were rethinking their approach to the films.

It will be more like a "gritty crime drama" than a traditional comic book movie. Scorsese's frequent collaborations with DiCaprio led many to make the connection that the actor would be cast as the Joker.

Joaquin Phoenix was also up to play Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman and Doctor Strange for Marvel, but passed on those roles.
