Bruno Mars beats Lorde for Album of the Year Grammy Award

Kendrick Lamar, who is likely to be the big victor tonight, and Bruno Mars also picked up early Grammy awards on Sunday in ceremonies ahead of the three-hour televised show celebrating the best in music.

Mars' 24K Magic won for best album, beating out Kendrick Lamar's DAMN., Jay-Z's 4:44, Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love! and Lorde's Melodrama. The surprise was, however, that Justin Bieber, who helped raise the song's popularity by lending his vocals in the remix, did not perform with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

Lamar opened the televised show in Madison Square Garden with a fierce performance, spitting out his verses as he was joined by U2 frontman Bono amid a sea of camouflage-clad dancers who later fell to the ground as if struck by bullets.

Lamar had been a favorite two years ago to win Album of the Year or "To Pimp a Butterfly", an experimental album that offered a soundtrack to the Black Lives Matter movement.

After performing Try on a trapeze at the 2016 Grammys and Beautiful Trauma while scaling a building at last year's Billboard Music Awards, Pink kept it super simple.

Kendrick Lamar is the king of the Grammy Awards - so far - picking up five awards, including best rap album for "DAMN." and best rap/sung performance for "Loyalty", with Rihanna.

Jay-Z, who was 2018's most nominated artists, with eight, walked away empty-handed.

The National won best alternative album for Sleep Well Beast. He performed a powerful medley of his songs, backed by a giant American flag and dancers in hoodies, who collapsed to the sound of gunshots as he rapped.

Host James Corden fished for some laughs with a sketch in which he had artists read segments from "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" to see who should be the next Grammy victor for best spoken word album.

- Best pop solo performance: 'Shape of You, ' Ed Sheeran.

Bruno Mars won the Grammy for album of the year with "24K Magic", squelching hopes that an album by a hip-hop artist would win the Recording Academy's top prize for a third time. "We come in peace, but we mean business".

Musicians and celebrities are expected to wear white roses to the event to honour the #METOO movement. Less expected was a win for Philadelphia band The War On Drugs for "A Deeper Understanding", released in August 2017.

In the Grammy Awards pre-show, Dae accepted the award with his now 91-year-old father at his side.

"I just want to say there are some incredible artists out there making music that deserve to be acknowledged that don't always get acknowledged because of popularity contests or numbers games and that's kind of unfortunate", she said.

The show also featured a somber performance of Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" by country artists Maren, Eric Church and the Osborne Brothers.
