Trump ends year as 'most unpopular' president

Donald Trump is wrapping up a year in office with the lowest average approval rating of any elected president in his first year.

Fifty-seven per cent of respondents to the NBC/WSJ poll said they disapprove of Trump, including 51 per cent who said they "strongly disapprove".

33 percent of Independents give the president a thumbs-up.

Gallup reported the most recent approval rating has plummeted to 30 percent from the 48 percent approval rating in the last year of President Barack Obama's administration, and is 4 points less than "the previous low of 34%" during the last year of President George W. Bush's administration.

The poll also finds that respondents are split on whether they think Trump is mentally stable.

20 percent picked "the strong economy". The biggest regional drop came in the Americas, where the image of United States of America leadership sank from a 49 percent approval rate in 2016 to 24 percent past year.

10 percent cited tax reform.

37 percent said none of the potential responses made them feel positive about Trump.

This was the lowest figure the poll has found for a modern President completing one year in office, according to NBC News.

"At the time of his inauguration, "hopeful" was the most used word about the 2016 results", said Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

The poll, conducted January 13-17, surveyed 900 adults. Median disapproval jumped 15 points to 43 percent, also a new record.
