With the lack of squad depth at Mauricio Pochettino's disposal, it is crucial that his key players are on song because his options off the bench tend to be limited. Lamela didn't come in until the 70th minute in relief of Son Heung-Min, which was curious.

Meanwhile, Spurs lost some ground on the top four and they could be five points behind fourth-placed Liverpool if the Reds record victory at rock-bottom Swansea on Monday evening.

Spurs are unbeaten in five games at the Saint Mary's Stadium (W4, D1), winning on their last two visits. Victor Wanyama has only recently returned from a spell on the sidelines, and Harry Winks, after showing so much promise earlier in the season, has been out of favour of late.

"The way his attacking players are performing must give him the belief that they can extend a run in which they've picked up 13 points from the last 15, scoring 15 goals in the process". Dele Alli came close in the 64th minute when he flashed a shot just wide of the post. Even when Spurs did find themselves in possession it was hard for them to find a way through the Saints' back line, and the home side looked as if they were content with a draw as the clock ticked down.

But the best late chances fell to Spurs, who recorded only two shots on target in the match, with a brilliant block from Stephens denying substitute Erik Lamela the victor, while Kane missed the chance to score his 100th goal by firing wide in the last minute.

Hugo Lloris is a doubt for the encounter due to illness, with Mauricio Pochettino unsure whether the France worldwide will be fit to start in goal.

- Aged 17 years, 199 days, Michael Obafemi became the second youngest player to make a Premier League appearance for Southampton after Luke Shaw (17y 116d). "If he deserves to play games then that is important, always".

Southampton looked highly impressive in this side, both going forward and defensively.

Saints stretched their winless run in the Premier League to 11 games but put in a spirited performance in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Super Sunday. That should have signalled Spurs taking control of the game and getting away from a team they have never had any trouble with in the past. Crucially, after this, Tottenham's next three league opponents are Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal, so they can not afford to head home from the South Coast with anything other than maximum points.
