In a White House clash of egos, Bannon never had a chance

In a White House clash of egos, Bannon never had a chance

Well before the 2016 presidential election, Democrats and "Never Trump" Republicans said then-candidate Donald Trump was a racist, xenophobic know-nothing and a liar. Bannon has not previously testified before any of them, or, as far as is known, before special counsel Robert S. Mueller 3rd, who is conducting a separate criminal investigation.

"Donald Trump set fire to the Hindenburg and once told me on the record that he enjoyed the movie 'Suicide Squad.' See you in court", Colbert added. Bannon and Wolff cease-and-desist letters, citing an alleged breach of a nondisclosure agreement Mr. Bannon has supposedly signed.

Bannon doesn't quit, though, and he'll be back.

In the book, Bannon called the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting that Trump's son Donald Trump Jr., son-in-law Jared Kushner and campaign chairman at the time Paul Manafort had with Russian figures "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".

He has trashed the book as "fake" and its author, Michael Wolff, as "totally discredited author" and has sought to defend himself as a "very stable genius". But Mr. Bannon has an ego only second in size to that of his former boss'.

Another possible avenue for Mr Bannon already is closed.

Steve Bannon, who returned to run Breitbart News after a stint as White House chief strategist past year, said on Tuesday that he was stepping down from his post as the outlet's executive chairman.

Inside the White House, Bannon was viewed as the keeper of Trump's nationalistic flame, charting the progress on the president's promises to his base on dry erase boards in his office.

Bannon, in the book, was also quoted saying investigators would crack Trump Jr. like an egg on national television.

Although Bannon left the White House in August, the recent release of Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, a scathing account of the current administration, revealed several inflammatory defamatory quotes from Bannon directed at Trump and Trump's immediate family members.

His departure from Breitbart threatens to further isolate the self-proclaimed champion of anti-Washington populism that swept Trump to power and whom Bloomberg once called "the most unsafe political operative in America".
