Marvel's 'Black Widow' Standalone Movie Sets a Writer

Marvel is finally putting its money where its mouth is, hiring Jac Schaeffer to write a Black Widow standalone movie that would star Scarlett Johansson, the Tracking Board has confirmed. Feige and Johansson have spent the years since Black Widow's Iron Man 2 debut insisting the film was always a possibility, but this is the first time the studio has moved forward on the project visibly.

After years of mumbling and shuffling their feet every time the prospect of a Black Widow movie was raised, it would seem that Marvel Studios has seen the light. Thankfully, Variety is reporting that the long overdue film is underway, with a script by the talented Jac Schaeffer in the works, which is doubly awesome. The decision came under the collaboration of actress Scarlett Johansson, who has already played Black Widow in 6 films, as well as the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

According to Variety, the project is in its very early stages and it hasn't been greenlit yet.

Marvel hasn't yet commented on the news. Featuring the story of an alien invasion happening during a baby shower, the script got the attention of Anne Hathaway who has attached herself to star in the movie. More likely, they have seen the stellar box office numbers and critical acclaim that were heaped on Wonder Woman, the first female superhero to headline her own movie, and steered to success by a female director. "I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committ [ed] to doing is Black Widow", said Feige. Not to mention just being an opportunity for a great Marvel character to kickass and explore a new angle on the Marvelverse.
