Sunderland set to pounce on Chelsea defender

"One of the reasons I've come to the club is because the manager is great with young players, so I can't wait to learn from him".

Clarke-Salter, who spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers last season, was on the bench for Chelsea in last night's FA Cup game at Norwich.

20-year-old Clarke-Salter will be Chris Coleman's first signing since he's taken over at the Stadium of Light. The fact that they are only willing to allow him to leave on loan is indicative of the high regard the Premier League champions hold him in.

Sunderland were knocked out of the FA Cup yesterday after losing 2-0 away to Middlesbrough and now sit bottom of the Championship.

"You don't play for a club like Chelsea unless you have tremendous ability".

"Jake is exactly the type of hungry young player I have spoken about and he has shown me just how keen he is to come to here and play in front of our supporters".

It is understood that the deal has been agreed in principle, with Clarke Salter expected to travel to Sunderland on Sunday to finalise the switch. "I feel like I'm now ready for the next step up in my career". He's made two first team appearances for Chelsea, with John Terry saying he's good enough to one day become a first team regular.
