Saoirse Ronan wins 'Best Actress' for 'Lady Bird — GoldenGlobes

Not only did Saoirse Ronan just win the Golden Globe for Best Actress, but she also wins our award for the most subtly feminist gown.

Nominated for three Golden Globes in her career to date, Ronan's last recognition came in 2016 for her turn in John Crowley's Brooklyn.

The Irish actress walked away with the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).

McDonagh lost out on Best Director to The Shape of Water's Guillermo del Toro.

She added: "I just want to say how inspiring it's been to be in this room tonight".

Taking to the stage, Ronan gave a shout-out to her mother, who was watching via FaceTime on "someone's phone over there".

"It's my mum's birthday tomorrow; she likes this kind of thing", said Martin McDonagh, accepting his award.

During her speech, the Lady Bird star was quick to thank the film's cast and crew.

When they weren't holding hands and supporting each other, they were expressing their absolute delight confirming that Justin Timberlake, who Gerwig wrote to to get permission to use one of his songs in the film, has seen "Lady Bird" and approved of the song's use.

In the television categories, Big Little Lies was the big victor with four awards. The actress is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. On the night, Balfe revealed that she is engaged.
