Packers to name Gutekunst new GM

The new Packers GM played two years of college football for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse until a shoulder injury cut his college career short. Gutekunst was in the running to replace Ted Thompson in Green Bay, so it can not be ruled out that he will be promoted to general manager.

Gutekunst just completed his 19th season in the team's player personnel department. He spent his first 13 seasons as a college scout.

When Mark Murphy offered the position to Gutekunst on Sunday, Gutekunst was in Houston on his way to interview for the Texans GM job.

He was also considered one of the frontrunners for the job with the San Francisco 49ers a year ago that eventually went to John Lynch.

Green Bay reached out to Seattle, according to reports, and requested an interview with Schneider, but were denied the opportunity by the Seahawks. A promotion from within isn't surprising for Green Bay, but the team may have been interested in an outside hire before making the promotion.

The Packers have not officially announced a hiring. In addition to stripping Thompson of his duties, the club is searching for new coordinators to replace Dom Capers and Edgar Bennett and several new assistants, including quarterbacks, defensive line and assistant linebackers.
