Russian Federation rejects U.S. proposal for United Nations emergency meeting on Iran

"This is a matter of fundamental human rights for the Iranian people, but it is also a matter of global peace and security", said Haley.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo has slammed the U.S. government's recent attempts to intervene in the domestic affairs of the Islamic Republic. These protests were followed on Saturday and Wednesday by large demonstrations in support of the government. "It is limiting the flow of information into Iran, restricting free speech, and attempting to prevent the outside world from observing its own repression", her statement said. Haley said Friday that "the world should applaud their courage", and the USA "stands unapologetically with those in Iran who seek freedom for themselves".

The US administration has also imposed unilateral sanctions on five Iranian companies linked to Tehran's ballistic missile program.

The U.S. tried to use the protests as a pretext to make attacks against the UN-endorsed nuclear agreement.

In contrast to the USA response to the Iran protests in 2009, where the Obama administration took a relatively hands-off approach, President Trump has promised "great support" for the demonstrators, while the State Department has hinted at sanctions for officials who abuse protesters and said that it will use Facebook and Twitter to communicate directly with activists. "The world will be watching what you do", Haley said. She also called government of Iran to "stop censoring the voice of the people, and to restore the access to the Internet". Some demonstrators openly chanted anti-government slogans at both the hard line clerics who run the country and at President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate who promised more political freedoms and economic improvements following sanctions relief after the 2015 nuclear deal. "The people of Iran are crying out for freedom". Now pro-government protests are taking their place, and on Thursday, regime supporters marched through parts of the country for a second day in a row. Since the demonstrations began six days back, at least 21 people have been killed - including a police officer - while hundreds more have reportedly been detained.

"Today, the Iranian people are once again rising up to demand freedom and opportunity, and under President Trump, the United States is standing with them". When the rights of the people are denied, the people rightly resist. "Unfortunately, many of our European partners, as well as the United Nations, have thus far failed to forcefully speak out on the growing crisis in Iran".

The British envoy was addressing the United Nations Security Council session which had been held at the request of the United States to discuss recent unrests in some parts of Iran.

Russian Federation said the United States is exploiting the protests in Iran in order to derail the landmark nuclear deal.

Heading into the council chamber, US Ambassador Nikki Haley gave reporters a thumbs-up and answered "yes" when asked if she had the nine votes needed for Friday's meeting to go ahead.
