BRO engineer killed, 8 missing in avalanche in J-K's Kupwara

Srinagar:Three bodies were recovered and one person was found alive under snow on Saturday after avalanches swept away two sumo vehicles at Khoni Nallah near Sadhna Top in Tangdar sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

The death toll due to the avalanche had reached 11 persons, the DC said, while stating that the rescue operation was nearly over in the area.

According to reports that total number of people killed in the avalanche has risen to ten.

According to local sources three people along with other six travelling in a passenger vehicle were missing as avalanche hits the road. The person identified s Ghulam Nabi Bhat s/o Ali Mohd Bhat of Kalmoona, Taratpora was immediacy shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.

"The search operation concluded on Saturday evening, and we recovered 10 bodies". The Chief Minister expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for solace to the departed souls.

The deputy Commissioner appreciated the role of local volunteers and insisted that without their help, the rescue would not have been so immediate.

Both the incidents occurred near the Sadhna Top area of the district.

Meanwhile, Minister for Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation and Reconstruction and Floriculture, Javaid Mustafa Mir, today announced a compensation under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the snow avalanche, an official spokesperson said.

Mir also issued directions to provide better medical facilities to the injured, the spokesman said.
