Troy mourns loss of homicide victims, following Saturday's arrests

Police say two people have been arrested in the quadruple homicide that took the lives of two women and two children in their upstate NY apartment.

The bodies of Shanta Myers, 36, her 11-year-old son Jeremiah, her 5-year-old daughter Shanise, and 22-year-old Brandi Mells were found in their basement apartment the day after Christmas.

James White, 38, and Justin Mann, 24, both of Schenectady, were each charged with one count of 1st-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder. He did say White and Mann, both have criminal records.

Court papers revealed the murders taking place at about 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21. Troy Police told Post-Star newspartners NewsChannel 13 that court appearances were scheduled for the suspects early Saturday. Police said Myers and Mells were in a relationship. Both entered a not guilty plea during their arraignment Saturday morning in Troy City Court. One of the women was found dead on a mattress on the floor while the other was nearby, face down and covered with a sheet.

The suspects are slated to appear in court January 4, 2018.

Police recovered a knife with blood on both the handle and the blade located on a ledge near a closet close to the victims. According to the Times Union, Troy Police Chief John Tedesco said one of the defendants knew one of the victims. The money will be used to provide mental health services for the family and to set up a scholarship and provide resources for Isaiah Smith, Myers' 15-year-old son and the sole survivor in the family.

"After being in this business for nearly 42 years, I can't describe the savagery of this", Tedesco told reporters Wednesday.

The Times Union reported that the two children were discovered together, kneeling with their heads and chests on a bed. It's not yet clear what led police to Mann and White.
