Christmas gift: India's first AC local train flagged off in Mumbai

The inaugural comes after the Western Railways conducted about 65 trial runs over two years at Kurla and Virar car-sheds before starting its services today.

This is the first train with automatic doors in the suburban system. Thousands of excited commuters crowded the stations along the line and clicked selfies before hopping on the swanky local, the city's lifeline.

"It was exciting to take the first train on the inaugural run".

Briefing about the fare, the statement said that the base fare of the single journey of AC local shall be 1.3 times of the base fare of existing fare of single journey first class ticket.

Gupta said, "This AC local is being run through a prototype coach and we will invite feedback from commuters and incorporate it in our next fleet of coaches".

However as an introductory offer for a period of initial six months, the base fare of single journey of AC EMU shall be charged 1.2 times, the statement said. It would later increase to Rs 221, based on fare calculation model.

Railway activists too expressed happiness at the launch of the AC train.

The Churchgate-Borivali weekly, fortnightly, and monthly passes will cost Rs. 855, Rs. 1,245, and Rs. 1,640 respectively. "Remaining personnel will be posted at each railway stations to ensure that commuters board the train without any hurdle", said an RPF official.

3 fast services have been scheduled between Churchgate and Borivali, which will halt at Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra and Andheri stations, in both directions. Also, fourth and seventh coaches will have seats reserved for differently-abled passengers.

In case of emergencies, emergency ladders with signage inside the coach are given to facilitate evacuation of passengers.
