Apple AirPods could get their first major update in 2018

Apple analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo today released a report indicating Apple will release a new version of AirPods in the second half of 2018.

The new model could feature a smaller quartz component from supplier TXC, however, externally Kuo doesn't expect the new model to look much different than the original.

An excerpt from the research note, published my MacRumors, show "upgraded" AirPods will help shipments will grow 100% YoY to 26-28mn units...

The AirPods appear to have sold out on the official Apple Store, with customers told they will have to wait until January 2 to receive a pair.

No further information has been provided about the improvements that might be made to the new AirPods.

With history as a guide, the second-generation Apple AirPods are likely to be announced next September, followed by a release before the end of next year.

KGI also addresses the supply constraints Apple is now experiencing with AirPods. According to them, a combination of affordability and sound quality have made them one of the hottest selling items for this holiday season.

Kuo has also stated that Apple has recruited Luxshare to help with manufacturing AirPods, but the primary limiting factor for production is the lack of availability of RF printed-circuit boards used for the AirPods battery. AirPods are now available for a limited time on eBay.

Those hoping to flaunt the Apple AirPods this holiday season are in for a rude shock, the earbuds have all sold out, and new stocks are not expected until 2018.
