His fellow officers put him in a patrol vehicle and rushed him to the Central Texas Medical Center.

On Monday afternoon Copeland was serving an arrest warrant for a violent crime around 2:23 p.m.in the El Camino Real subdivision when he was shot multiple times, said Chief of Police Chase Stapp during an emotional news conference held Monday evening.

San Marcos city manager Bert Lumbreras said at the news conference that Copeland's colleagues were emotional after the shooting.

Stapp said it was unclear if the wound was self-inflicted or inflicted by police gunfire.

The San Marcos Police officer shot and killed in the line of duty has been identified as 58-year-old Kenneth Copeland.

The warrant names Stewart Thomas Mettz, 51, who remains in an Austin hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound he suffered during a short standoff with the San Marcos/Hays County SWAT team. The officer was reported to be with other officers while serving the warrant.

He was wearing a protective vest when he was shot and died about 3:50 p.m. shortly after arriving at Central Texas Medical Center, Stapp said. He said he saw another officer grab the injured officer by the back of his shirt and pull him into a patrol auto.

A statement from the San Marcos police department reports that the as yet unidentified suspect has also been shot.

"I want to offer my thanks to all of the members of the Central Texas Medical Center who tried very hard to save Ken's life", said Chief Stapp.

"Ken's a hero. Today was his day off". "His picture is hanging in different parts of this police department because everybody loved him".

He is the first San Marcos police officer to be killed in the line of duty, Stapp said. "They are a part of our family as well and they did a great job".

Abbott added, "Cecilia and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family and to the entire San Marcos Police Department".
